This week Special Olympics PEI is highlighting and celebrating our Summer Program Volunteers, individuals who share their time and talents enriching the lives of our athletes, individuals like Aimee Webster.
Meet Volunteer, Aimee!
Question: How long have you been volunteering with Special Olympics?
Answer: I have been volunteering with Special Olympics PEI for 6 years.
Q: What is your current role with Special Olympics?
A: This summer, I am a Program Volunteer with the Summerside Bocce program. In the winter I volunteer with the Summerside 5-Pin Bowling program.
Q: What first brought you to volunteering with Special Olympics?
A: My first experience volunteering with Special Olympics was through the Sport & Leisure Management Program I attended at Holland College in 2013. Part of the curriculum was volunteering at a Special Olympics Program. I volunteered at the Charlottetown Community Sport program. It was lots of fun, and very uplifting. All of the athletes were super happy to be there. It really put everyone in a better mode when they left.
Q: What is your favourite part about volunteering with Special Olympics?
A: My favourite part about volunteering with Special Olympics is celebrating all of the athletes' successes, cheering them on, and getting to know them!
Q: What would you tell someone who is thinking about signing up as a volunteer?
A: Volunteering with Special Olympics is a great chance to get involved with the community. There are lots of opportunities with Special Olympics, both locally and for travel to competitions off-Island (hopefully again before too long!) as both a volunteer and a coach.
Q: What is your future goal volunteering with Special Olympics?
A: My future goal is to staying involved, and to make sure that all athletes who want to be involved have the opportunity to do so.
Thank you, Aimee! And thank you to our 48 Summer Program volunteers. It is because of our dedicated volunteers that the programs offered by Special Olympics PEI are possible. If you would like to make a difference in your community, learn more about becoming a volunteer today!
