Donna Pyke, Charlottetown, has been a Special Olympics PEI athlete for over 28 years. She will be representing PEI at the 2018 National Bowling Championships in the sport of 5-Pin Bowling. In addition to 5-Pin Bowling, Donna, over the years, has also participated in Bocce, Swimming, Snowshoe and Track and Field.
This will be Donna's second time competing on the National Games level, having also competed at the 2014 National Summer Games in Vancouver. Donna's favourite Special Olympics memories come from the 2014 National Summer Games.
Donna was one of the first athletes to participate in Bocce when the sport was first introduced by Special Olympics PEI. Bocce was introduced in the summer of 2014 as an off season sport opportunity for our 5-Pin Bowling athletes. Special Olympics PEI has a large number of 5-Pin Bowling athletes, many of whom only participate in Bowling. Adding Bocce to our summer sport schedule encouraged our athletes to stay active and social over the summer months. Since that first summer the program has grown from a handful of athletes to over 30 athletes attending each week! Donna was also amongst the first athletes to compete in Bocce. She competed at the 2016 Provincial Summer Games in Nova Scotia, and took home a Gold Medal.
Donna is looking forward to being with her friends at the Bowling Championships, and meeting new friends from across the country. Donna is Team PEI's biggest cheerleader! She names teammate Patti Bradley as her number 1 sports fan.
Donna works at Tremploy in Charlottetown. She enjoys shopping in her spare time.
