Special Olympics BC Local
South Okanagan
When and how did you get involved with Special Olympics?
I started approximately 2007 as a volunteer. I found that it was so rewarding to watch the athletes grow and learn that they could do anything they put their minds to. Just watching them celebrate their accomplishments is a joy.
Will this be your first Special Olympics Canada Games? If not, which other National Games were you part of and in what role(s)?
No. I participated in the 2018 National Games in P.E.I. where I went as a bowling coach and had the best time. It was a privilege to have been chosen to accompany my bowler to National Games.
What does it mean to you to be part of Special Olympics Team BC 2024?
I have been very thankful to be chosen to accompany the superb athletes from the South Okanagan. They worked very hard to get the opportunity to go to National Games.
What is/are your goal(s) for these National Games?
I hope to be able to make these National Games very special for my athletes and keep them focused on the end results whether they win or lose.
What is your favourite Special Olympics experience to date?
When two of my bowlers got a medal at the 2018 National Games, was very proud of them.
What does competing at National Games mean to your athletes? (or, if this is your first National Games, competition in general)
My athletes are very, very excited. Three out of the five bowlers on my team will going to National Games for the first time. They have told me they want to their best, have fun, and make new friends.
What storylines are you excited to see develop in your SO Team BC sport team leading up to the National Games?
I would like to see them realize that a small team from a small town can do big things.
What would you say about Special Olympics to encourage someone to get involved?
I would tell them that if they wanted to see some dedicated athletes that never say they can't do something, come see us! See how you can encourage even one athlete to accomplish even one small task and see how you grow to be a mentor. You will always find something that you have been missing in your life.
