Leslie Bowling
Special Olympics Team BC 2020 5-Pin Bowling Coach

When and how did you get involved with Special Olympics?

I got involved 20 years ago when my daughter Ashley became an athlete. I was sitting on the sidelines as a spectator, and thought it would be more fun to be a part of the organization and give back for everything they were doing for my daughter.

Will this be your first Special Olympics Canada Games? If not, which other National Games were you part of and in what role(s)?

No it won't. I was a 5-pin bowling coach at the 2006 SOC Summer Games in Brandon, MB.

What does it mean to you to be part of Special Olympics Team BC 2020?

I am proud to be a part of the team representing our province. It brings me great joy to continue the path of success with my athletes.

What is/are your goal(s) for these National Games?

For my athletes to have the best games experience possible, whether that is winning medals, or doing their very best and enjoying themselves.

What is your favourite Special Olympics experience to date?

As a coach, I honestly don't have a favourite. All of my experiences with Special Olympics are memorable. As a parent of a Special Olympics athlete, my favourite experience would be travelling to Shanghai, China, to watch my daughter Ashley compete in rhythmic gymnastics at the Special Olympics World Summer Games.

What does competing at National Games mean to your athletes? (or, if this is your first National Games, competition in general)

My athletes are all excited to compete. They all would like to do their best, make me proud and hopefully come home with a medal. P.S. I'm already proud!

What storylines are you excited to see develop in your Team BC sport team leading up to the National Games?

I think I would like to see stories about how the athletes lives have changed due to being involved with Special Olympics. Particularly how they feel included and proud of their accomplishments.

What would you say about Special Olympics to encourage someone to get involved?

You will not find a more rewarding experience than when you volunteer with Special Olympics. The love, admiration, and appreciation that the athletes have for the coaches and volunteers is second to none. To see how happy the athletes are to be part of such an inclusive organization is so rewarding.
