In 2010, Newmont Goldcorp changed the game for Special Olympics in our province by launching a gift of $1 million over four years, which significantly expanded Special Olympics BC’s life-changing programs for children with intellectual disabilities. In 2014, Newmont Goldcorp initiated a second $1-million four-year commitment in order to provide empowering opportunities for Special Olympics BC athletes of all ages throughout the province.
Newmont Goldcorp is now ensuring a lasting impact with a new multi-year commitment of $500,000, carrying forward until June 2021, to help Special Olympics BC transform lives through the joy of sport and end the isolation and exclusion that people with intellectual disabilities sadly still experience.
“Newmont Goldcorp is a deserving member of Special Olympics BC’s Hall of Fame. They genuinely seek to make a lasting difference in the communities where they have operations. They see the powerful impact Special Olympics has on the lives of athletes and their communities, and they have been an important part of our life-changing work for 15 years,” says SOBC President & CEO Dan Howe.
The first four-year commitment from Goldcorp allowed SOBC to more than double the number of youth programs offered around the province, and their second gift enabled growth of youth programs and expanded opportunities for SOBC athletes to train, compete, and improve their health.
The beginning of Newmont Goldcorp’s support of Special Olympics BC dates back to 2005, when they started as a sponsor of the Final Fore Golf Tournament. In 2010 the event was rebranded with their name to recognize the significance of their far-reaching support.
We can’t wait for the 2019 Newmont Goldcorp Invitational Golf Tournament coming up on June 20!
