SOBC – Mission’s Brendan Turner has been involved with Special Olympics for over two years and has quickly made an inspiring impact to the athletes he coaches.
Turner is experiencing his first competition cycle, attending Provincial Games in 2023 and National Games in 2024. He is the head coach of the Mission Blazers floor hockey team, who recently represented Special Olympics Team BC 2024 at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games Calgary 2024!
At the 2024 National Games, the team experienced all the ups and downs that the sport of floor hockey has to offer. Through it all, Turner maintained a positive outlook. During each game, he made sure to ask his team regularly, “Are you guys having fun?” The team’s response, time and time again, was a resounding “YES!”
Turner encourages his athletes with great dedication and effort, helping to set an inspiring example of inclusion and empowerment – a reminder of what Special Olympics is all about.
"I just want us to be able to leave Calgary knowing we gave it everything we had, with our heads held high... They have put in a lot of hard work to achieve their goals, and to see the fruits of their labour is such an exciting and rewarding experience," he says.
Special Olympics has been a rewarding experience for Turner, and you can join in on the fun as an athlete or volunteer to change lives – including yours!
“It’s the best decision you could ever make. I can’t imagine not doing it now,” he says.
