Special Olympics BC – Kamloops athlete Tyra Flukinger competed with pride in basketball at the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, earning a silver medal and enjoying the memorable experience.
Joining Special Olympics opened the door for Flukinger to a community that celebrates the power and joy of sport and inclusion.
“Special Olympics has impacted me because it’s an open door. So many diverse disabilities and that’s awesome – we’re not hidden,” she says.
Flukinger joined 21 other incredible athletes, coaches, and mission staff from B.C. on Special Olympics Team Canada 2023. They gave their all at the World Games from June 17 to 25. Everyone came home bearing podium finishes, personal bests, and huge smiles!

“It’s pretty cool to be part of the first women’s basketball team going to World Games. I think that’s pretty honourable. Being a First Nations Métis Black woman, I think it’s cool to be part of a diverse women’s team!” Flukinger says.
For Flukinger, there was no other better way to exemplify the unity of the Special Olympics movement than through the sport of basketball.
“Basketball is a beautiful game when the five players on the court all play with one heartbeat,” she says.
