Special Olympics BC – Delta’s Kerrin Smith says volunteering with SOBC is a great fit for her because it gives her opportunities to be involved in sports while giving back to her community.

Along with serving as SOBC – Delta’s Volunteer Coordinator, Smith coaches athletics and is a program facilitator for her Local’s Active Start and FUNdamentals programs. Smith says helping athletes reach their goals and learn new skills is a very rewarding experience.

Smith says her favourite thing about Special Olympics is the positive, supportive atmosphere. She says even though athletes and volunteers work hard, everyone still manages to have a lot of fun.

When did you start with Special Olympics, and how did you get involved?

I started just over two years ago in January 2015. I had some spare time and was looking to volunteer somewhere. Special Olympics was the perfect fit as it helps me stay involved in sports while giving back to the local community. I started by volunteering with track and field and have expanded my involvement since then.

What has been your most memorable Special Olympics experience?

There have been a couple! It's really rewarding to see someone you coach achieve milestones or accomplish something new. But in terms of specific events, we held a bocce picnic a few months ago to introduce the sport to our athletes. We had a huge turnout and it was so nice to see everyone enjoy the time together.

What is your favourite thing about being involved with SOBC?

It's a very positive environment. As much as we're there for specific reasons (to train for a sport, plan for a fundraiser, etc.), we still manage to have a fun time. What would you like others to know about SOBC – Delta? It is so easy to get involved! Whether you're looking to volunteer a little or a lot, we're an amazing option and can find a great fit for you!
