Hardworking Special Olympics BC – Chilliwack Program Coordinator Dorothy Franson is inspired by the amazing athletes in her Local, who she says always try their best and do a great job of supporting each other.

Franson first got involved with Special Olympics when her daughter Melinda signed up as a bowling athlete. In her almost 20 years with SOBC, Franson has worked to make a difference in a number of roles, including Local Coordinator and Treasurer. She loves working with the friendly athletes in her Local and she appreciates how Special Olympics provides them with social opportunities.

As Head Coach of SOBC – Chilliwack’s bocce program, Franson is dedicated to helping athletes develop their skills. She looks forward to supporting the team as they compete in the 2017 SOBC Summer Games in Kamloops in July.

When did you start with Special Olympics, and how did you get involved?

I have been involved with Special Olympics for approximately twenty years. I first got involved when my daughter became an athlete in bowling.

What has been your most memorable Special Olympics experience?

I have many memorable moments, so I will share a few:

  • When my daughter went to Provincial Games in Comox as a swimmer. There was one swimmer who was behind the other swimmers she was competing against by a good length or two. After she swam to the end and completed her event, the athletes, coaches, and parents all stood up and clapped for her. She was so proud of herself and it didn't matter she finished so far behind everyone else.
  • Seeing my daughter go to National Games within four years of learning how to swim.
  • Seeing my daughter and other athletes from our Local move on to National and World Games.

What is your favourite thing about being involved with SOBC?

I really enjoy working with the athletes; they are so friendly and accepting of each other. They all try their best at all times and are so encouraging to each other.

What would you like others to know about SOBC – Chilliwack?

I think our athletes in SOBC – Chilliwack are an amazing group. Age and ability have no bearing on how they treat each other. They encourage/help each other in their sports. As a Local Committee member, this encourages me to ensure sport programs are in place and coaches are well-trained (we have some awesome coaches as well).

The athletes benefit so much from the social aspect as well.
