The countdown begins for the 2025 SOBC Summer Games

Excitement is rising in Prince George and across British Columbia for the 2025 Special Olympics BC Summer Games! From July 10 to 13, 2025, approximately 1,100 athletes with intellectual disabilities from B.C. and Yukon will come together to compete with pride and be celebrated for their incredible abilities.

These will be Special Olympics BC’s first Provincial Summer Games since 2017, after the pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2021 SOBC Summer Games.Β 
Prince George Mayor Simon Yu is excited about the 2025 event. These Games will mark the third time that the City of Prince George has hosted Provincial Games for Special Olympics BC.

β€œWe are honored to once again host the Special Olympics BC Summer Games. Our city is ready to welcome athletes, coaches, and families with open arms, and we are committed to making these Games an unforgettable celebration of athleticism, courage, and community spirit,” Mayor Yu said.

Longtime resident and former Prince George Mayor Lyn Hall, known for his dedication to community engagement through sport, is honoured and thrilled to lead the development of the 2025 Special Olympics BC Summer Games as the Games Organizing Committee Chair.

β€œThe Games provide our Special Olympics athletes with a huge opportunity to showcase their talents, and for our city to show our incredible hospitality to the athletes, coaches, and families,” said Hall. Hall was also the Co-Chair of the 2001 Special Olympics BC Summer Games in Prince George.

Joining Hall on the Games Organizing Committee as Vice Chair is Renee McCloskey, former President of the 2022 B.C. Summer Games. Born and raised in Prince George, McCloskey also brings a wealth of experience in external relations and sport. Β 

Canadian Tire Prince George, a pillar of community support in Prince George, is proudly stepping up as the Platinum Sponsor of the 2025 Special Olympics BC Summer Games. Their support points to a shared belief in fostering inclusive communities.

The 2025 SOBC Summer Games will be held at the following venues:

  • Canada Games Outdoor Plaza
  • Prince George Aquatic Centre
  • Masich Place Stadium
  • Duchess Park Secondary School
  • Rotary Field
  • Aspen Grove Golf Course
  • Freeman Park
  • Strike Zone Bowling and Mini Golf Centre

Across the province, Special Olympics BC athletes are currently competing in 2024 Regional Qualifier competitions to earn spots in the 2025 SOBC Summer Games. Top performers in Prince George will quality for spots on Special Olympics Team BC for the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat, Alberta, which will be the qualifier for the 2027 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Santiago, Chile.

More than 1,000 volunteers and sponsor support will be needed to help stage the 2025 SOBC Summer Games. SOBC Games volunteer registration details, rosters, and more will be announced in the months to come!
