Special Olympics BC Local
Chilliwack
When and how did you get involved with Special Olympics?
Joined in 2012 and just called up our Local wanting to see if I could help.
Will this be your first Special Olympics Canada Games? If not, which other National Games were you part of and in what role(s)?
No. I attended the 2020 National Games in Thunder Bay as mission staff for speed skating.
What does it mean to you to be part of Special Olympics Team BC 2024?
Having the opportunity to help each athlete and coach reach their goal and be a part of that team environment is so rewarding.
What is/are your goal(s) for these National Games?
To ensure SO Team BC arrives at National Games, the best that we can be.
What is your favourite Special Olympics experience to date?
Watching the sportsmanship between athletes. I experienced an athlete in soccer run down the field knowing full well he could easily go around his opposing athlete due to his visual impairment and stopped and placed the ball at his feet, encouraging the opposing player to kick it back. Very special moment of sportsmanship.
What does competing at National Games mean to your athletes? (or, if this is your first National Games, competition in general)
It allows them to show case their skills and personal bests at a high level.
What storylines are you excited to see develop in your SO Team BC sport team leading up to the National Games?
The commitment it takes to reach their personal best.
What would you say about Special Olympics to encourage someone to get involved?
Show up and it will speak for itself. :)
