Where can I find my Local’s contact information?
- You can find your Local’s contact information by visiting the community programs page.
- You can also contact Special Olympics BC staff by visiting our Contact page.
I’m interested in competing in my sport, how do I sign up?
- If you are a registered athlete currently participating in a Local program, you are eligible for competitions. All eligible athletes will be considered and selected by coaches and staff to attend specific competitions. Any athlete who may have behavioural issues and/or medical issues that require additional support or who has not been attending practices may not be identified to compete. Please discuss your qualifications with your coach.
Can I become a Coach?
- SOBC does not currently have a program for athletes as coaches. However, there are many Athlete Leadership opportunities such as the Peer Mentor Program through the Athlete Leadership Academy.
The current season is coming to an end, how do I sign up for programs for an upcoming season?
- You can indicate your interest(s) on the registration forms and submit completed forms to your Local. Their contact information can be found on your community's page on the SOBC website.
- If you are applying to programs during the off season (July to August), please stay tuned for a new program schedule which is typically available in September for fall/winter programs and in March for spring/summer programs.
I can no longer attend the current program I’m registered in. How do I switch to a different program?
- Inform the coaches of your current program at least two weeks prior to your end date.
- You can speak to your community's Program Coordinator or Local Coordinator to see if there are any programs that work better with your schedule. Some programs have wait lists so you may not get into every program you wish to participate in.
If a sport is not offered in my Local, can I register with a different Local that offers it?
- You can, but you must apply to register with the Local closest to your community that offers that sport. Only if you meet all qualifications to move to another Local will your request be granted. Please refer to Participation Outside of Community of Residence Policy and contact your Local to discuss this further.
Can I sign up for programs in two or more Locals?
- No, you may only participate in one community.
I have recently moved to a different city. Do I need to switch to a different Local?
- You may opt to remain registered with your original Local as long as you had been previously registered with your original Local for a period equal to or greater than 12 months.
- You have the option to register with the Local of your preference and may only participate in programs offered in that Local. Please refer to Participation Outside of Community of Residence Policy.
- If you are moving out of province, please contact the other Chapters of Special Olympics.
