When did you start with Special Olympics, and how did you get involved?
I have always been very dedicated to volunteerism and serving my community. In the fall of 2013, I was working out at my local gym when I met one of the head coaches for SOBC – Richmond who asked if I might be interested in volunteering my time. I knew very little about the organization at that time, or what the role of the coach might involve, but I was happy to help out and I haven’t looked back since. It’s been a huge learning curve and an amazing experience. I am now the Head Coach of Club Fit and I have been the Head Coach of athletics since the spring of 2014.
What has been your most memorable Special Olympics experience?
One of my most memorable experiences is when I had an opportunity to coach alpine skiing at the 2015 SOBC Winter Games in Kamloops. The games were beginning to wind down as the events were all completed, and there was a dance scheduled on the last day following the Closing Ceremony. As a coach and a mentor to the athletes, I always strive to be inclusive, to lead by example, and to teach them that you don’t leave anyone behind. So, I coordinated for a group of athletes to put on superhero costumes that we made that afternoon and we all went down to the gym together. It was such a fun experience to be part of; the athletes put on their costumes and immediately came out of their shells. Even the shyest athlete wasn’t shy anymore! My goal for that evening was to give everyone the best possible celebration experience because they had earned it! Our band of superheroes stayed on the dance floor until the end of the night, and we were among the last ones to close the whole party down.
What is your favourite thing about being involved with SOBC?
It’s very difficult to choose a favourite, as every opportunity to participate in different programs and events is pretty spectacular. That’s what is so great about Special Olympics, the positive, inclusive, grassroots organization focused on athleticism and healthy living for people with intellectual disabilities that has such a profound effect on everyone involved. I truly feel lucky to be able to be part of this phenomenal community.
What would you like others to know about SOBC – Richmond?
That this incredible program exists in our community, and that athletes of all skill levels and abilities are welcome! It is a joy to be a part of this community and a privilege to coach our athletes. We are constantly meeting new athletes at our Club Fit and athletics programs, and we have seen such positive reactions from athletes as they prove to themselves what they are capable of. By grouping athletes of similar abilities, skills, and backgrounds, we help make everyone feel included in a safe, positive atmosphere.
