Join Special Olympics BC for National Coaches Week as we spotlight figure skating coach Jessica Chapelski and other coaches across the province who make a difference in the lives of athletes with intellectual disabilities, their families and other volunteers every single day.
Chapelski says she became a Special Olympics coach by accident.
Now, she’s been involved for about 13 years and runs SOBC—Vancouver's figure skating program, in addition to coaching for Special Olympics Team BC at multiple Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, and coaching athletes at multiple Canada Winter Games. “Being a part of a community of like-minded coaches and athletes who are excited to skate has brought me more joy and motivation than I ever could have expected,” she says.
She once coached generic figure skating during university, but stopped when she was hired with a school district. Chapelski was then asked by the skating club to help out a new Special Olympic figure skater for a couple months, which turned into much longer.
“I’m still coaching that athlete that I started with and am supporting him to his fourth Special Olympics World Winter Games,” she adds.
Chapelski says one of her favourite things about coaching figure skating is seeing her athletes be happy and free to skate. “We see this joy in all our athletes – from the ones who are just starting to feel confident walking on the ice to our world competitors,” she says. “We are so lucky to get to provide a space where they can feel safe and proud of themselves.”
She says her first SOBC Provincial Games has always been a standout memory. “I was blown away by the number of athletes and the high calibre of sport,” she says. “The care, support and strong coaching provided by the coaches stands out as well. When I saw those games, I knew I wanted to stay involved in an organization with so many amazing people.”
She says being involved with Special Olympics has given her more than she ever could have imagined. “I’ve become a better coach, teacher, and human being by working with our athletes.”
Chapelski adds that she’s constantly being reminded of how joyful sport can be, no matter what level. “When I am having fun with the athletes, we all learn more.”
Thank you for the tremendous positive impact you have on your community!
