Meet Athlete Laila Currie
Laila Currie has been making a splash as a Special Olympics BC – Creston athlete since 2016. Currie's passion for sports has grown throughout her time with the movement, with swimming standing out as her favorite.
“I like swimming and working my hardest to complete my goals,” says Currie.
In addition to swimming, Currie is involved in bowling, floor hockey, Club Fit, and bocce. Each of these activities has given her opportunities to stay active, develop new skills, and engage with her community. Currie says her involvement in sports makes her feel “proud, happy, and energized.”
Currie enjoys getting exercise through sport, and spending time with the friends she swims with.
“I’ve watched her grow and become such a confident swimmer thanks to Special Olympics,” says her sister, Cian Currie. “I enjoy seeing her so busy, hanging out with her friends and getting exercise. And loving it too, because that’s the important part.”
Laila Currie’s journey is a testament to the power of sport to build confidence, foster friendships, and inspire others. Through her commitment to swimming and sports, Currie continues to make waves in both the pool and her community.
With Special Olympics BC, athletes with intellectual disabilities find belonging, inclusion, and empowerment through sport.
