Since joining Special Olympics BC in 2010, SOBC – Langley coach Brendon Schmidt has made a lasting positive impact on athletes, fellow coaches, and families. His tailored approach to training, combined with his unwavering support and encouragement, has empowered his athletes to surpass their personal bests and shine in competitions. In recognition of his dedication to his coaching, Schmidt is the 2024 recipient of the Howard Carter Award.
Schmidt is the head coach of the Langley athletics program and has also made significant contributions as an assistant coach for the Langley basketball program. Throughout his coaching journey, Schmidt has participated in numerous Special Olympics National Games and Special Olympics Provincial Games, including attending the 2023 Provincial Games in Kamloops as Chef de Mission for Region 3. Prior to competitions, he adds practice nights and often coaches two to three times a week to ensure athletes are prepared.
In addition to coaching athletes, Schmidt has gone above and beyond to help his fellow volunteers develop their coaching skills. No matter what level an athlete is at, Brendon gives everyone the same amount of attention and time while catering the training to their needs.
Schmidt’s willingness to learn has led to his completion of many coaching courses. He has a knack for fostering an environment of continuous learning, ensuring that everyone involved in the program gains new skills and insights. His fellow volunteers feel that his enthusiasm and positive spirit makes him approachable to everyone.
“He empowers the athletes by giving them confidence and competence,” says one volunteer. “I've learned a lot from just watching him over the years.”
