Why Become an Athlete?

Let me Win. But if I Cannot Win, Let me be Brave in the Attempt
Athletes and Coaches

There is a place for everyone with an intellectual disability in Special Olympics.

Special Olympics NL is a unique not-for-profit organization providing sports opportunity to individuals with an intellectual disability. Through the power of sports, individuals discover new strengths and abilities, skills and successes. Our athletes find joy, confidence and fulfillment - on the playing field and in life.

Newfoundland & Labrador has over 800 athletes, who, on average, participate in at least two programs! The benefits of these programs include:

 - improved balance, coordination and body control
 - physical fitness and conditioning
 - increase in sport skills and competitive skills
 - increase in self-confidence and social skills

Special Olympics NL offers programs to individuals of all ages. In areas of our province, children as young as two can register in Active Start. This program is the first stage in the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model that looks to develop the physical education of individuals with an intellectual disability. This model allows people to stay "active for life". For more information about our sports and programs please visit Our Programs section.
