A number of Canadian law enforcement officials were recognized for their outstanding support of Special Olympics in Canada at the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) International Conference in Las Vegas November 8 to 10.

The LETR, a dedicated group of law enforcement officials from 42 countries, have been fundraising for Special Olympics since 1981. In 2017 alone, more than $58 million was raised worldwide.

At the annual conference last weekend, dozens of LETR members and chapters received awards, including seven from Canada:

LETR Ontario received the Diamond Award for raising more than $1 million for Special Olympics in 2017. In fact, Ontario-based law enforcement officials raised an impressive $2,484,000 for the movement, ranking the Canadian province as the seventh highest fundraising LETR chapter in the world.

LETR Alberta received an Emerald Award for its impressive $574, 563 raised in 2017.

Edmonton Police Service Constable Amanda Trenchard received the John Carion Unsung Hero Award for her contributions to the success of LETR in Alberta.

Retired Deputy Chief Rick Lucy of Abbotsford Police received the Richard La Munyon Hall of Fame Award for his significant contributions to the Torch Run in B.C.

LETR Yukon received a photography award for a photo of Special Olympics athlete Gaetan Michaud during a Polar Plunge, taken by Star Flower Photography.

LETR Yukon was recognized as the second highest fundraising chapter (per capita).

LETR Saskatchewan was recognized for increasing its fundraising by 180 per cent.

Congratulations and thank you to all LETR members in Canada – and worldwide – for transforming the lives of individuals with an intellectual disability. Special Olympics couldn’t do it without you.
