Special Olympics athlete Annick Léger

Annick Léger's life changed when her mom registered her for her local Special Olympics program at 11 years old. She had been feeling like an outsider at school because of her disability, often finding herself on the sidelines, picked last during sports activities. The feeling of exclusion weighed heavy on her young heart.

All of that changed when she joined Special Olympics.

Annick's journey began with basketball, a sport that not only introduced her to the thrill of competition but also fostered a sense of belonging. The camaraderie she experienced on the court ignited a spark within her, igniting her passion for competition and community. She now participates in athletics, rhythmic gymnastics, soccer and snowshoeing – even competing at multiple Special Olympics World Games throughout the years. But beyond sports, Special Olympics gave her a community of friends, boosting her confidence and transforming her into the vibrant person she is today.

“I’ve really come a long way with Special Olympics and it makes me very proud. They once told my mom I would have trouble learning to walk and talk – now I’m running faster than all of them!” she shares.

Annick's story showcases Special Olympics' real impact. Listening to athletes' stories makes you part of our inclusive movement. Let's create more tales of empowerment, growth, opportunity, and community like Annick's.
