ASSITANT COACH
SPORT: Athletics
PROVINCE: British Columbia
How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?
14 years.
How is your life different since joining Special Olympics?
Coaching with Special Olympics has contributed to my personal growth in many ways. It has driven me to seek out sport specific learning opportunities, develop my leadership skills, and has encouraged me to change my outlook on what 'success' means for each individual. I have learned to place more value on an individual's growth and effort as opposed to outcomes and placings. Coaching athletes who consistently demonstrate their best effort has been a privilege and I feel proud to have been involved with Special Olympics in my role as a coach.
What do you like most about the sport you will be participating in at Special Olympics World Summer Games Berlin 2023?
Track and Field is a sport that challenges an individual's limits and encourages one to set new goals each season. Track and Field is an inclusive sport that can accommodate individuals with varying talents in throws, jumps, sprints, middle distance races, and long distance races. Success comes from improving upon one's previous milestones, which encourages continued growth each time you step up to the start line.
What is your proudest moment with Special Olympics?
In 2019, I was able to be a part of Team Canada for the Special Olympics World Games as an Assistant Coach for the Athletics team. I was proud to represent my country, my province, and my community at these Games. I look forward to having the opportunity to represent my country and home once again at the upcoming 2023 World Games.
What does Special Olympics and attending World Games mean to you?
Being a part of Team Canada means having the opportunity to represent my country and my community on the world stage with respect, courtesy, and sportsmanship.
What is your goal for Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023?
My goal for the Special Olympics World Summer Games is to support the athletes and their individual goals, to contribute to a healthy sport culture, and to encourage discussions around the important role that Special Olympics Programs have in the health and wellness of individuals around the world.
