Today is World Down Syndrome Day – a day to raise awareness, promote inclusion and celebrate the achievements of so many.
We witness firsthand the ability of Special Olympics athletes with Down syndrome, and today and every day, we recognize their remarkable achievements and challenge misconceptions. Fostering inclusivity and celebrating diversity starts with understanding and acceptance. Together, we can create a world where everyone’s potential is recognized and valued.
MEET SPECIAL OLYMPICS ATHLETE, MODEL AND DANCER, CAMERON GORDON
Cameron Gordon first joined Special Olympics Prince Edward Island Active Start when he was only a small child. His mother signed him up for the program, although in the beginning, she was hesitant about his participation.
"When Cameron was born, I couldn't picture his future. People were trying to tell me about all the possibilities, and they mentioned things like Special Olympics, but at the time I was not excited about the idea. It's not what I wanted for him,” shares his mother, Catherine. “Little did I know that in the years to follow, Special Olympics would become such a meaningful part of our lives - it's our community, social life, active life and has really helped Cameron become to man that he is today. What he's overcome and achieved is truly incredible, and I am so proud of him."
As he got older, Cameron explored more sports with Special Olympics, eventually finding his passion in powerlifting.
"It makes me strong and powerful - like I am unstoppable and can do anything," he shares.
Special Olympics has given Cameron the confidence to take on new challenges outside of sport as well. He has also discovered a love for dancing, a passion that has lead him to an incredible opportunity on a whole new stage - next week he will appear on Canada's Got Talent.
"It was very exciting to audition for Canada's Got Talent," shares Cameron. "Dancing makes me so happy and powerlifting with Special Olympics helped make me strong for performing lifts with my dance partner."
You can catch Cameron on the episode of Canada's Got Talent airing next Tuesday, March 26th on City TV. When asked what we can expect from his performance, Cameron shared, "It's a big secret, I can't say anything more. You'll have to tune in to find out!"
This World Down Syndrome Day, and every day, Cameron wants people to know that disability doesn’t prevent success – lack of opportunity does.
“We are exactly the same as you, and we can do anything if we get the chance to show what we can do. Be kind and include,” he shares.
THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF SPORT – AND MUSIC
Just like sport, music possesses the remarkable ability to bring people together, create shared experiences and act as a universal connector. Recognizing the power of music in uplifting spirits and fostering a sense of unity, Special Olympics Canada has launched the 'One-of-a-Kind Anthem' campaign.
This innovative campaign empowers athletes like Cameron Gordon to create their very own personal anthem, tailored to uplift them, provide strength and prepare them for any challenge – on and off the playing field.
