Year of the Volunteer - Enriching Lives Gala Committee Member, Betty Anne Morrison
2026 is the International Year of Volunteers. All year long we will be highlighting and celebrating our amazing volunteers.
The Enriching Lives Gala is Special Olympics PEI's signature fundraising events. To be successful, events of this size and scope take a dedicated group of individuals. We are very fortunate to have an amazing Committee who dedicate their time and talents in selling tables and securing auction items each year.
This month we are highlighting one of our Enriching Lives Gala Committee Members, Betty Anne Morrison. In addition championing Special Olympics through her role as the Director of Sales and Marketing at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Prince Edward, Betty Anne also secures many amazing silent auction items.
We asked Betty Anne a few questions about her experience volunteering as a member of our Enriching Lives Gala Committee.
Question: What is your favourite part about being a member of the Enriching Loves Gala committee?
Answer: The most rewarding aspect of being a volunteer with Special Olympics in PEI is witnessing the confidence and joy that athletes gain when they are given the opportunity to participate, compete, and belong. I love how it is about building self-esteem, celebrating individual strengths, and creating an environment where every athlete feels valued and supported.
The sense of community is incredible; athletes, families, coaches, and volunteers come together with a shared commitment to respect, acceptance, and teamwork.
Personally, the experience has been deeply meaningful. The determination, resilience, and positivity of the athletes are inspiring and often put my own challenges into perspective. Knowing that perhaps my time and effort contribute to moments of pride, connection, and lifelong memories for athletes makes volunteering with Special Olympics one of the most fulfilling roles I’ve ever had.
Q: What is your favourite part about being a volunteer with Special Olympics PEI?
A: My favourite part of fundraising for Special Olympics PEI is the athletics and, just as importantly, the organization that makes it all possible.
What has kept me involved for more than 20 years, however, is the organization itself. Special Olympics PEI is consistently grounded in respect, inclusion, and genuine care for its athletes and their families. I have seen the positive impact it has across the province, not only through sport but through the sense of belonging it creates. Being able to support an organization that operates with such integrity and purpose makes fundraising deeply rewarding and continues to motivate my long-term involvement.
Q: Why should others consider volunteering with Special Olympics PEI?
A: If you’re looking for something meaningful, rewarding, and uplifting, I encourage you to volunteer. Come to one event. See it for yourself. You’ll understand immediately why so many of us stay involved year after year.
