Audrey Mitchell first got involved with Special Olympics through school, participating and competing in both Powerlifting and Unified Bocce. Now she is getting ready to compete on the National stage as a member of Team PEI 2026 softball.

When Audrey was getting ready to graduate from Bluefield High School her teachers shared information about Special Olympics PEI's community programs. Audrey and her family talked it over, and Audrey decided that she wanted to join. Having grown up around softball, with her older sisters playing at the Provincial level and her father coaching, it felt naturally for Audrey to sign up for softball.

I love everything about softball. I love being on a team, spending time with friends, and travelling.

Looking ahead to her first Special Olympics Canada Games, Audrey says she is excited! She is looking forward to playing against some new and different teams. Audrey says she was a bit nervous at first, however she has overcome those nerves, and is now just excited.

I am working on my batting right now. My goals for these Games are to try and play my best.

Audrey's parents, Shawn and Megan Mitchell are making the trip to Medicine Hat to cheer on their daughter.

It's a pleasure to be able to watch her play and to experience the joy of playing the game and just seeing the excitement on her face when she learns of tournaments and different opportunities. For a lot of years she watched her sisters play on the ball fields. At a younger age she wasn't able to play, but as she got older she became more capable of being on the field, and she said she really wanted to do this. We are very proud.

Audrey's parents speak highly of Special Olympics and their involvement to date, highlighting the positive atmosphere, something they didn't often see with their other daughters in generic sport.

It's such a different vibe. The players and the coaches are there to have fun, and win or loose they're high fiving with smiles on their face. The stress as a parent is not there either because you know they are there having fun.

Audrey's parents see many positive benefits to their daughter's involvement in Special Olympics. They say that Audrey is more focused, and has goals she is working towards.  Having multiple opportunities to expend her energy keeps her "calm, cool and collected!"

Audrey has made lots of new friends through Special Olympics.

It feels like I have another family. My softball team feels like another family to me.
