HEAD COACH - SWIMMING

PROVINCE:  Saskatchewan

How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

For 27 years.

How is your life different since joining Special Olympics?

My life has changed by being able to work with athletes who give back more than what I give them. The athletes provide humour, dedication, they challenge me to be a better coach and person. Also, the volunteers have also made an impact on my life and the lifelong friendships that have been made.

What do you like most about the sport you will be competing in at Special Olympics World Summer Games Berlin 2023?

Swimming is a sport that can be done individually but also part of a team. You are competing against yourself and it is an activity that you can enjoy leisurely or competitively your whole life. Swimming allows me to re-energize.

What is your proudest moment with Special Olympics?

My proudest moment is when an athlete achieves their goal of learning a new skill, beats their time, and seeing their success in sport transfer to their daily life, whether it is moving out on their own, getting their dream job, making new friends, etc.

What does Special Olympics and attending World Games mean to you?

Being part of Special Olympics Team Canada is truly an honour and privilege. Sharing the experience with the athletes and coaches will be humbling and it will be rewarding to see a part of the world with the athletes.

What is your goal for Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023?

My goal is to help prepare the athletes to have a good competition, swim the best they can, and for everyone to enjoy the total games experience, including healthy athlete, cheering for Special Olympics Team Canada in another sport, taking in the culture, making new friends and learning something from the journey.
