Everyone has been going through a lot of change recently and we look forward to safely offering programs once again. Here is an update on what the Government of Saskatchewan's announcement regarding introducing sport and recreation in the Reopen Saskatchewan plan means to us.
- Our current status is that all programs are suspended until June 30th. If we think about everything we need to have safe programs, we may need to imagine a summer with only a few or possibly even no programs.
- We are working on some things to have in order before we can approve returning to programs again. All sports organizations in the country are doing the same and we have some extra things to think about because we offer so many sports.
Here are ALL the things that need to happen before we can start programs again:
- Approval from the Government of Saskatchewan (This has been received for only some of our activities for June 22nd)
- Minimum standards of program delivery provided by Special Olympics Canada to ensure that we are doing things within our insurance and legal limitations.
- Feedback from our Special Olympics Community Leaders and Volunteers that everyone feels safe to return. (We are having a meeting this week to ask, and will be reaching out to hear from all communities.)
- Return to Play procedures and protocols that are currently in development. We have to make sure that when the time comes to gather for programs that we establish some new rules and ways of doing things so that everyone stays safe.
- Coaches, volunteers and athletes need to be trained on the new safety rules and procedures.
The best Sports leaders in our country are giving us good advice that we need to proceed slowly and carefully. We are working with experts to make sure that when we return to programs everyone is safe and feels safe. It isn't always easy to wait but we know that we are doing an important job together to protect our communities. We are working towards getting all of those boxes checked so we can have a lot of fun together when it is safe to do sports again!
