Volunteer Spotlight: Frances Serna, Vegreville Coach

She is the jack-of-all  trades volunteer in Vegreville.

A mentor, a coach, a one-woman cheer squad, bus driver and fundraiser, Frances Serna makes sure that Special Olympics sports are thriving in Vegreville.

“My goal (for the athletes) is a simple one. Keep them active and fit so they stay healthy,” says Serna.

Serna has been part of Special Olympics in Vegreville for eight years and is the head coach for athletics and floor hockey.  Like most volunteers in Special Olympics, Serna became part of the movement because it touched someone close to her life- for her it was her son and her work in classrooms with special needs students. Motivated to find activities and programs to get her son active, she choose to get involved with Special Olympics and now finds a renewed purpose of continuing on- our athletes.

“(Special Olympics) means a commitment to the athletes,” says Serna.  “The smiles on their faces inspire me to stay positive. I think most memorable moment (in Special Olympics) was when one of the teammates helped our legally blind athletes score a goal.Every year I have learned something new. ”

Thank you Frances Serna for helping make opportunities for Special Olympics athletes in your community. For more information on Special Olympics Alberta-Vegreville, please visit their community page.
