Medicine Hat Unveils 2017 Summer Games Logo
Medicine Hat is ready to host the best Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games!
On July 5, the Special Olympics Alberta Games Organizing Committee (GOC) unveiled the new logo that captures the spirit, excitement and pride of Medicine Hat to host the 2017 Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games from July 7 to 9, 2017 in the new Medicine Hat sports facility, the Family Leisure Centre located at 2000 Division Ave. N.
The Special Olympics Summer Games identity was designed by 14 year old Bailey McCann from Medicine Hat who beat out many youth submissions from a contest released by the GOC back in April. The design captures Medicine Hat’s sunny climate which represents over 2,500 hours of sunshine the city receives and the iconic Medicine Hat Finlay Bridge embracing the Special Olympics logo.
“The logo decision was not an easy one. The five person committee narrowed it down to three entries in the end. In the end after the graphics where sharpened up Bailey's was chosen over the other two,” said Brian Varga, chair of the Games Organizing Committee.
“The logo depicts Medicine Hats 333 days of sunshine we average every year and our over 100 year old heritage green Finley bridge that connects the north to the south in the center of the city. The logo is completed by the Special Olympics emblems that surround the sun. This is an original and great logo that will represent the games from now till the games commence on July 7, 2017 in Medicine Hat.”
“Medicine Hat is a perfect city to host the games. With the newly expanded Family Leisure Centre as the games "Hub" the facilities used for competition will prove to be second to none with most other centers in Alberta. The GOC (Games Organizing Committee) is made up of seasoned veterans that have volunteered with numerous provincial games overs many years that Medicine Hat has hosted. The Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games is in great hands with this very gifted group of individuals. The next year will be very busy for the GOC but be assured no stone will go unturned in order for these games to be a huge success. We look forward to all the athletes, coaches, family and friends that will travel to our community in July 2017. We look forward to seeing you.”
