Special Olympics sport programs are delivered through our amazing coaches and sport volunteers.
Coaches and sport volunteers provide sport training to the athletes in their specific sport program. Athletes’ skill development, and personal achievement in sport are coaches’ primary focus areas. Our volunteers are role models and character builders. They strive to give Special Olympics athletes an awareness of their own worth, ability, courage and capacity to grow and improve.
Sport coaches and volunteers generally give one hour a week of their time to assist with the sport programs they are assigned to. Some programs run from September to May. Others are mini-programs as well which run form 6 to 8 weeks.
Coaches can be certified in any Special Olympics sport at age 16. All Head Coaches must be at least 18 years old. Volunteers who are younger than 18 and at least 14 can provide assistance and event support under the supervision of a certified head coach or assistant coach.
Volunteers also support Special Olympics by helping with fundraising and events throughout the year. To become a volunteer or learn more, contact us at sport@sonwt.ca
