Volunteer Spotlight: Rob Dykes, Coach

Have you ever made a decision in junior high that would make a lasting impression for the next 22 years?

At 15 years old, Rob Dykes made a simple decision to be part of Special Olympics, impacting not just 120 athletes, but also strengthening his community in Strathcona County.

“I have been a coach with the floor hockey and athletics programs since I started in 1993,”say Dykes.

“I have also been a member of our local board with varying roles including member at large, a chairperson , and I am currently the treasurer and program coordinator for the floor hockey and athletics programs.”

Rob Dykes has always been involved in sports and stayed active all his life. Special Olympics is the perfect combination of sports, the desire to give back to the community, and meeting new people. With years fostering athletes’ self esteem and athletic skills, Rob also learned some important life lessons from Special Olympic athletes along the way.

“I absolutely love the positive outlook and mindset of most of our athletes,” says Dykes.

“I have learned a lot from our athletes over the years with such things as sportsmanship, not taking yourself too seriously, and just letting yourself have a good time and enjoy the moment.”

22 years with Special Olympics has given opportunities for Rob to travel across Alberta and coach athletes on a national stage, taking part in the 2004 Canada Winter Games in Charlottetown, P.E.I and 2006 National Summer Games in Brandon, Manitoba. Rob considers himself fortunate for being part of a movement that not only develops the skills for the athletes he works with each day, but also developing as the person he wants to be.

“ My experience with Special Olympics has been wonderful,” says Dyke.  “ I have learned a great deal about myself and have learned a lot of skills that I use in my life outside of Special Olympics.”

Special Olympics recognizes dedicated and caring volunteers like Rob Dykes. We would like to THANK YOU for all your do and the impact you make in local communities throughout Alberta.
