This year’s winner was Brenda Friesen and her drawing Rocco the Reindeer, which will be featured on the 2018 Special Olympics Alberta Holiday Card.
Brenda answered some questions about her artwork, the holidays, and her time with Special Olympics. Congratulations, Brenda!
What is your name and how old are you?
B: Brenda Friesen - age 36
What Special Olympics Alberta affiliate do you belong to?
B: Calgary
When did you start with Special Olympics and why did you decide to be part of Special Olympics?
B: 2000 - I wanted to sign-up for bowling and be part of a team.
Any favourite memory?
B: Whenever I would bowl a “turkey."
What sports do you play?
B: Bowling, bocce, and soccer.
Which is your favourite?
Bowling is my favorite sport because I have friends there.
Your artwork was amazing. What inspired you to draw the reindeer?
B: I like nature and animals.
Does the reindeer have a name?
B: Rocco
What does it mean to you to have your artwork featured on the Special Olympics Alberta holiday card?
B: I like when people see my art.
What does inclusion mean to you?
B: Sports is for everyone.
What would you say to another athlete who was interested in joining Special Olympics?
B: It is fun and you make friends.
What is your favourite part of the holidays?
B: Decorating my house and making Christmas crafts.
What is your favourite carol?
B: Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer.
What is your favourite holiday movie?
B: Favorite movie is The Grinch.
