Statement on Spring Economic Statement 2026
Special Olympics Canada is thrilled to see an investment of $755 million over 5 years into the Canadian sport system, as well as significant ongoing investment beyond those 5 years, as announced in the Spring Economic Statement on April 28, 2026.
We applaud the federal government and Prime Minister Mark Carney on this generational investment, the largest increase in Canada’s sports system in 20 years and we thank Secretary of State (Sport) Adam van Koeverden and his team for their tireless advocacy around investing in playgrounds to podium for Canada’s athletes.
Canadians know and appreciate the value of sport and physical activity, especially when it is rooted in inclusivity and accessibility. The moments of joy, from watching a child learn to kick a ball; to gathering of friends at a local softball game; to watching a Canadian athlete earn a medal on the international stage are moments that resonate and fill every Canadian with pride.
For decades, Special Olympics Canada has shared research proving the benefits a healthy and active lifestyle has for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. We continue to improve and expand the quality, opportunity and accessibility of sport across the country, while improving awareness and support in the community in regard to Special Olympics Canada.
We applaud the federal government’s focus on investing in world-class sporting events and legacy-projects to increase community and grassroots access to sports and facilitates across Canada and for the increased focus on mental health and safe sport framework, to ensure that all athletes can participate safely and securely.
We look forward to working closely with the federal government and Secretary of State (Sport) Adam van Koeverden and his team to continue to build a safe, equitable and inclusive sport system in Canada where everyone is welcome.
