National Police Week - Meet Stephen Hug

Stephen Hug

For over 30 years Saskatchewan Law Enforcement Torch Run has been raising funds and awareness for Special Olympics Saskatchewan. We cannot remember a time that CO Stephen Hug wasn’t involved with LETR - and that's because he has been there since the beginning.

In his over 30 years volunteering with LETR, Hug has taken on many important roles within the organization. He has been chair for the Provincial LETR and is an invaluable member of LETR in Prince Albert. He has put many hours into fundraising at bingos, and is one of the main organizers of the annual Wildlife Dinner and Gord Dyck Memorial Golf Tournament in Prince Albert. From planning the events, securing sponsorships, getting incredible prize donations, selling tickets to the events, emceeing the evening, and every detail in between.

Hug was honored in 2014 for his contributions to LETR when he received the Rob Plunkett Law Enforcement Torch Run Award. This National LETR award is presented to a law enforcement officer who volunteers their time to fundraising activities for Special Olympics through the Law Enforcement Torch Run. Winners are chosen based on their lifetime contributions to Special Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch Run and their leadership in raising funds for the organization.

Even though Hug has since retired, he continues to dedicate his time and efforts to LETR and our athletes. He has been able to bring together different groups within law enforcement, including Corrections, Highway Patrol, Parks, RCMP, Conservation, and City Police Officers, as a collective and collaborative entity that supports the LETR.

In addition to the work that Hug does with LETR, he is also actively involved with both the Special Olympics floor hockey and bowling programs in Prince Albert. He works very closely with his local Special Olympics community, and always encourages integrated activities for Special Olympics athletes. Hug is an extremely devoted individual who puts forth every effort possible to carry out the Special Olympics mission of enriching the lives of athletes with intellectual disabilities.

“The athletes are awesome people and it’s just fun to support them. If you’re ever having a bad day type of thing, it’s nice to go and play floor hockey with the athletes and just enjoy.”
