Team PEI 2024's Figure Skating Team will be represented by 2 athletes at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games 2024 - Callum McEwen (Charlottetown) and Alyssa Chapman (Charlottetown). They are supported by Head Coach, Cindy Stavert. This is the first time in recent history that Team PEI will be represented by 2 Figure Skating athletes at a National Games.
Callum joined Special Olympics 5 years ago to support his participation in the sport of Figure Skating, being drawn to the inclusiveness Special Olympics provides. While Figure Skating is the only Special Olympics sport Callum participates in, he stays busy and active, participating in soccer, skiing, swimming, parkour and tennis. Callum is the youngest member of Team PE I 2024. This will be Callum's first National Games.
Alyssa has an extensive history in Figure Skating, and in sport, with Special Olympics. Having been involved for 22 years, Alyssa has attended 8 National Games (in Figure Skating, Swimming and Soccer), 6 Canada Games (in Special Olympics divisions for Swimming and Figure Skating), and 3 World Games (in Figure Skating and Female Soccer). Alyssa first joined Special Olympics to find a peer group.
Cindy Stavert, while new to Special Olympics coaching, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role of Head Coach for this Figure Skating team. She was first introduced to Special Olympics Figure Skating watching the Special Olympics divisions at the recent Canada Games in PEI. The sheer joy of their accomplishments was a highlight for Cindy. Cindy works for both the Kensington Area Skating Club and the Alberton Silver Blades Skating Club.
In February / March of 2024, Special Olympics PEI will be represented by 33 athletes, supported by 21 coaches and mission staff, at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games 2024 in Calgary, Alberta. Team PEI will compete in 7 sports: 5-Pin Bowling, Cross Country Skiing, Curling, Figure Skating, Floor Hockey, Snowshoeing, and Speed Skating.
