Special Olympics NL Hosts Successful Team Sports Try-It Day
Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador would like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to everyone who helped make this year’s Team Sports Try-It Day such an energetic, inclusive, and memorable event.
Athletes had the opportunity to try Soccer, Basketball, and Floorball, gaining hands-on experience in a fun and supportive environment while exploring new team sport opportunities. The day was filled with excitement, teamwork, and plenty of smiles, highlighting the power of sport to build confidence, skills, and community connections.
We are grateful to Waterford Valley High School for generously welcoming us into their facility and helping create a positive and accessible space for athletes throughout the day.
Special Olympics NL also sincerely thanks the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, with particular appreciation for funding support through the Celebrate NL Grant. As 2025 was the Year of Sport in Newfoundland and Labrador, the province celebrated sport and athletes through marquee events such as the 2025 Canada Games. Funding programs like the Special Projects in Sport Fund and the Sport and Recreation Access Fund play a vital role in helping organizations like Special Olympics NL provide meaningful, inclusive sport experiences for athletes across the province.
We were thrilled to partner with several outstanding sport organizations:
-
Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association (NLBA) — Thank you to Amanda Miles and Alicia Bird for leading engaging basketball sessions and bringing tremendous enthusiasm to the gym.

-
CBS Soccer Association — Thank you to Technical Director Phil Molloy and his colleagues for delivering excellent soccer sessions, and to Executive Director Joy for stopping by to support the final sessions of the evening.

-
Infinity Floorball — A huge thank-you to Steve Broome for introducing athletes to the fast-growing and exciting sport of floorball through well-run and energetic sessions.

Finally, thank you to all the athletes, families, volunteers, and staff who brought incredible energy and made the day such a success. Events like the Team Sports Try-It Day showcase the true spirit of Special Olympics — inclusion, teamwork, and community through sport.
We look forward to hosting more opportunities like this in the future and can’t wait to do it again!
