When and how did you get involved with Special Olympics?

When I was 16, a teacher assistant, Peg Wenting, encouraged me to join the Matsqui Blades.

Will these be your first Special Olympics Canada Games? If not, which other National Games did you compete in, and in what sports?

No, it is not my first Special Olympics Canada Games. I participated in soccer at the 1990 National Games in Vancouver, in the 2004 National Games in P.E.I. for speed skating, and in the 2006, 2010, and 2014 National Games for track and field.

What were your results in the 2019 Special Olympics BC Winter Games? How did you feel about your performance?

I got a bronze and a silver medal. I had worked hard to make a comeback, so I was very happy with my results.

What does it mean to you to be part of Special Olympics Team BC 2020?

I think it's very important. I feel very proud.

What is your goal for these National Games?

Get a gold!

What does competing at National Games mean to you?

To be chosen to go to the Nationals is a real honour. I love Canada and I love the feeling I get when I'm competing and meeting other athletes.

What do you like most about the sport you will compete in at National Games?

I like the excitement of the speed on the ice. That's why I enjoy ice skating and watching hockey.

What is your favourite Special Olympics experience to date?

The 2004 National Games in P.E.I. Everyone was so welcoming, and there was a big storm at the time, and many outdoor events were cancelled. I'll never forget being there and how nice everyone was. I want to return for a visit.

What would you tell someone about Special Olympics to encourage them to get involved?

I would tell them you will have a great time and get lots of exercise and stay in shape. Also, you get to travel, get to know great coaches, make new friends and attend many activities throughout the year. When you're in the Special Olympics programs you feel important and you feel like you really belong.

What other Special Olympics sports do you participate in?

Track and field, softball, and may go back to soccer in the future.

Please tell us a little bit more about yourself! What else would you like people to know about you?

I love my family: mom, stepdad and brother. I follow sports (soccer, football, golf, baseball) on TV by listening to commentaries and watching as many games as possible. I really like hockey, I'm a huge Canucks fan. I participate in running events in my community and surrounding ones, too. I really like competition. I like hiking and gardening with my mom and stepdad. I like all my computer devices and I'm good at using them. I like reading about nutrition, sports, and my bible. I've worked at McDonald's for 27 years where my employer and customers like me and say I do a good job.

What is one word you would use to describe yourself? :)

Happy!
