Special Olympics Alberta Coach Development Program

In partnership with Alberta Sport Development Centres 2018-19

Special Olympics Alberta in partnership with Alberta Sport Development Centres in Calgary and Edmonton are excited to announce and offer a 6 month Coach Development Program for Special Olympics coaches in Alberta! This program will focus on providing education, support, and services to coaches. Topics  will reflect the needs, content, and experience related to coaching Special Olympics athletes and will also lead into the Provincial Winter Games in February 2019.

This program will be delivered in both Edmonton (University of Alberta) and Calgary (Mount Royal University). Interactive workshops will take place on the second Wednesday of every month (Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 14, Dec. 12 and Jan. 9) from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Specific locations within each institution will be shared at a later date. Coaches may travel to the location that is most convenient for them (program curriculum and topics will be consistent across both locations).

Workshops will focus on five topics that will help coaches critically think about their experiences, education, and knowledge (sport science focused) when working with their athletes.

Topics to be discussed will include:

1. Personal Growth for Coaches (reflection and self assessment)

2. Games Experience (experience multi-sport games from an athlete and coaches perspective)

3. Athlete Preparation (understanding the importance of physical assessments and functional movement screens and how this information can impact athletes training)

4. Female Athletes (learn and understand why it is important to train male and female athletes differently)

5. Leadership (understanding good leadership and communication with your athletes)

In addition to these educational sessions, a select group of coaches will be identified to participate in a capstone project to help them critically reflect on their experience as a coach, what they have learned throughout these workshops and how they will apply this information to change their coaching experience in the future. Additional meetings, discussions, and support will be provided to these coaches, culminating with an in person presentation to their colleagues about their experience. The ASDC Calgary/Edmonton and Sport Science Consultants will provide support and feedback on the capstone projects.

Spots are limited for this aspect of the program. Details for this capstone project will be finalized prior to the start of the program.

Coaches will be required to complete the entire 6 month program and maximum of 5 coaches per sport will be accepted into the program.

Sports to focus on will include:

  • 5 Pin Bowling
  • Alpine Skiing
  • Cross Country Skiing
  • Curling
  • Figure Skating
  • Floor Hockey
  • Snowshoeing
  • Speed Skating

A coaching manual will be developed based on the content provided through this program. This manual will be provided to each coach following the 6 month completion of this program as part of their experience working within and preparing for the Provincial Winter Games 2019.

All levels of coaches are welcome to take part in this opportunity. Click here to apply today!

The deadline to apply is August 3, 2018.

Please note: These workshops are free for coaches attend.

All coaches that apply will be contacted by Special Olympics Alberta.
