Jory Chan and his Calgary basketball team are set to make their triumphant return to the national stage after an impressive run at the 2014 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Vancouver.

The 25-year-old Chan has been involved with Special Olympics for the past six years. He will compete as part of Team Alberta at the upcoming 2018 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Chan and his teammates will look to improve on an incredible performance four years ago where they earned a bronze medal.

He is honoured to be selected for Team Alberta and is looking forward to the competition along with experiencing what Nova Scotia has to offer.

“IT MEANS A LOT TO ME,” SAID CHAN. “TO ME BEING A PART OF TEAM ALBERTA, IT'S NOT JUST A TITLE, BUT [IT] GIVES ME A CHANCE TO GIVE IT MY ALL AND HELP MY TEAMMATES WHEN THEY NEED IT.”

The future is bright for Chan and his goal is to always do the best he can at whatever he aims to achieve.

Chan maintained that his mother has been his number one supporter and helped push him to be the best in everything he does.

“I've always looked up to my mother for not giving up on me and wanting me to be the best I can be moving forward,” said Chan.

Basketball is appealing to Chan not only because it is fun, but he believes it gives him a chance to improve himself mentally, physically, and socially.

Although basketball is his priority, Chan is a multi-sport athlete who also plays 10-pin bowling and golf for Special Olympics Alberta - Calgary.

Outside of sports, Chan keeps himself busy through his job at Landmark Cinemas, where he has worked for the past nine years.

He enjoys reading, playing video games, and watching all of his favourite TV shows including: Game of Thrones, Arrow, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Super Girl, The Big Bang Theory, Friends, and How I Met Your Mother.

Special Olympics plays an important role in Chan’s life, claiming that it has helped him stay active and improve his skills.

“TO BE A PART OF SPECIAL OLYMPICS MEANS A LOT TO ME,” SAID CHAN. “IT KEEPS ME ACTIVE AND KEEPS ME AT MY BEST IN WHATEVER SPORT I AM IN AT THE TIME.”

With the 2018 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games set to run from July 31 – Aug. 4, Chan’s training is well underway. He is actively playing sledge hockey, floor hockey, bowling, and basketball to stay fit.

Chan has also been eating healthier, keeping hydrated, and the right amount of sleep required to perform to the best of his ability.
